Chapter 02: Ascension

Unending streams of email messages, a dozen tasks competing for your attention, few back-to-back calls on the horizon... such a sight is certainly not unfamiliar for most office professionals. It is scarcely necessary to mention that the ability to multitask is imperative in our daily lives. There is, however, one question that remains: why are some people more productive than others, and why do they not ever seem to flounder no matter how much is on their plate?

As cliche as it might sound, it certainly helps if one looks for every edge that he can get, as with everything else in life. Naturally, a professional who can create tools to optimize his work processes can spend more time on value-adding activities that will help him get ahead. The ability to program enables him to do that.

Programming education is now ubiquitous – it is found in the curriculum of many educational institutions and in the offerings of countless external course providers. Unfortunately, it is taught in a way where learners would often soon forget what they have learnt and is never competent in applying it in a practical setting.

In this course, you will learn how you can use programming to extract information from any website, create your own excel functions and automate countless other tasks. While the course is taught in an investment bank setting, it will be just as relevant to other industries. After all, the financial industry does not have a monopoly over the need for productivity.

Unlike a generic programming course, this is a skills-based course – you will know exactly how to apply programming in your job – and explain in concrete terms to hiring managers how your newly acquired knowledge makes you useful. Hiring managers do not generally look for geniuses or people with the brightest ideas. As an entry staff or intern, you are a desirable candidate if you show you possess the willingness to learn and have the skills to improve processes. This course helps you achieve that.
